Do you believe that the political ideology of most Americans is somewhere in the middle?

Political pundits would have you believe that all Americans are on the fringe ideologically. Most of what you hear on cable news speaks of "far-left loons" and "far-right bigots". I disagree, I believe the vast majority of Americans are somewhere in the center. Do you identify as far-right or left? Also why do you think it is that the media plays to the fringe?
