I can't make any friends?

I just finished my freshman year of high school and it SUCKED!!! I was in activities and stuff but nobody ever takes interest in me. I wander if i'm just not meant to interact with anyone and have fun. I"m not like a total freak in which people would try to avoid, it's just when ever I put myself out there and make a real effort to meat people, it never works out because they are so into their other friends and they think why make room for me. Please help! I'm on the brink of insanity i'm always trapped in the house and never go out to do anything fun. I don't even know what kids my age do for fun! That's how lonely I am and how long I have been lonely.
