Why do my goldfish suck up pebbles and then spit them out?

He's on the hunt for more food. Do not be tempted to overfeed your Goldfish however! This is natural behaviour. Be wary if he can get the pebbles all the way into his mouth though. Goldfish are better in tanks with very large pebbles they can't suck up or bare bottomed.
